Hats for Harris: Crafting Change Through Community

Handmade patriotic hat featuring red, white, and blue colors, adorned with stars and stripes, symbolizing support for the Women's March and unity in the community

As we prepare for the upcoming Women’s March on November 2nd, 2024, my sister Kesley and I are thrilled to introduce our initiative, “Hats for Harris.” This community-driven knitting and crochet project aims to support Kamala Harris and Tim Walz as they advocate for social change and equality. We invite knitters and crocheters of all skill levels to join us in creating vibrant, handmade hats that symbolize unity, empowerment, and our commitment to progress.

The inspiration for “Hats for Harris” came during a memorable family vacation to Iceland. After knitting five Icelandic sweaters for each of our family members, I became fascinated by the local culture and the unique wool shops. It was during one of our adventures that we stumbled upon a shop by Icewear, where I discovered a fantastic selection of wool I had never seen before. The excitement of exploring new materials sparked our creativity.

Around the same time, the political landscape was shifting. Joe Biden had just stepped back in the presidential election and announced Kamala Harris as his running mate. It was in that moment, with the backdrop of Iceland’s breathtaking scenery, that Kesley truly understood the assignment. She envisioned reinterpreting the iconic Pussyhat project from 2017 into an American flag design—an opportunity for Democrats to reclaim their patriotism.

Inspired, we immediately purchased red, white, and blue yarn, along with knitting needles and crochet hooks, to begin designing a hat that would honor the spirit of the Pussyhat while celebrating our national pride. Once back at our cruise ship cabin, we dove into our projects with enthusiasm. However, like all creative endeavors, it wasn’t without its challenges. We ripped out our stitches several times, refining our designs as we sat with our father, who diligently cross-stitched alongside us.

Despite our enthusiasm, we left Iceland without the perfect concept for our hats. Yet, as I sat on the plane home, inspiration struck, and a knitting pattern began to take shape in my mind. Kesley, ever resourceful, reached out to a friend who is a crochet genius. Together, they crafted a beautiful hat that perfectly encapsulated our vision.

As the Democratic National Convention approached, we knew we had to act quickly. We set out to write our patterns, create instructional videos, and rally fellow makers to join us in crafting these hats. Each stitch we make is a declaration of support for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, as well as a commitment to the values of equality and social justice.
